MEL CAPTURES A SUPERNOVA

Hi guy's here's my latest image. On Wednesday night I h ad a go at Supernova SN2011B in NGC2655, a 12th magnitude galaxy 71 million light years away in the constellation Camelopardalis.  I set up the Astrotrac and soon discovered what a pain a ball and socket head is aiming towards the celestial pole.I didn't have much time so I used the Canon 200mm lens on the Canon 550D, The image with the inset picture is the full frame with NGC2655 and the Supernova enlarged to show the detail. I managed to get 9 exposures of 120sec @ 1600iso, I was amazed firstly that I actually got the galaxy it in the frame and stunned that I had actually recorded my first Supernova.

The Latest Astrophotography from Mel Gigg

CometC-2009R1McNaught by Mel on Thursday Night 3rd June 2010 at the Rollright Stones Site.

Mel's first go at the Rosette Nebula on Sunday Night with his little Megrez 72mm, He left the camera exposing for two hours in the garden whilst he watched Wonders of the Solar System in the warm. Lots of time spent stacking the 44 x 3 minute exposures but he is quite pleased with it, and so he should be, a fantastic bit of Astrophotography.

After some cloud Mel Gigg did manage to get this snap (18x 100 seconds actually) of M42 the Orion nebula.

This is the first time of trying out his auto guider, a very frustrating half an hour setting it up under beautiful clear skies timed perfectly to finish just as a batch of cloud arrived. No filters used, just the canon 500D on the 110 mm refractor at 800 iso.

On Tuesday 8th December , 20 CNAAG members were privileged to spend the afternoon in the company of Sir Patrick Moore at his home in Selsey , W.Sussex - a full report will follow soon. photo Mel Gigg.

Bryan' Photo of his Fullerscope.

'This photo is a stack of 20 exposures of only 40 seconds each at 1600 iso on a Canon 500D. The scope was my little Megrez 72mm with FFIII flattener reducer, shot from the back garden in Witney with no filters. It's amazing what the camera brought out, I couldn't even see the galaxy by eye.'  Mel Gigg
