CNAAG
Welcome to the web site of the Chipping Norton Amateur Astronomy Group.

The group was founded in January 2005 with just 4 amateur astronomers with the intention of forming an informal focus group for anyone interested in the stars and space . By April 2008 we had over 35 very keen stargazers on our contact list - a fantastic response and growing all the time .We aim to meet regularly indoors ( although not exclusively)where astronomy talks and demonstrations take place in an informal and sociable atmosphere (ie . without feet and hands freezing !) . Observing takes place whenever commitments and the weather allow and we have the choice of several exclusive observing sites including areas close to the magical Rollright Stones , a unique privilege for the group. Since July 2008 we have moved on to a subscribed status which now allows us to ensure that we can plan events both now and in the future and ensure that we can operate in a professional manner for the benefit of our members and the general public. Whilst we have a strong and dedicated committee the emphasis is always on the fun and enjoyment that astronomy offers and we welcome everyone to all of our meetings . There is no requirement to have any astronomical knowledge , equipment or experience ( but if you have , bring it along ) , all you need to bring is your interest and enthusiasm ( and possibly a warm coat ! ) - the stars and universe above Chipping Norton will do the rest. Whatever your level of interest , please get in touch and it will be great to meet you.

"The top of Rollright hill was so admirably suited to the purposes of the Druid astrologers,
that our modern astronomers might profitably select it as the site of a great Midland observatory

SUNSPOT REPORT - Keep observing with SAFETY in Mind

DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN -

USE an APPROPRIATE SOLAR FILTER OR PROJECT THE IMAGE

Here below is the Quick Snapshot of Sunspot Group 16/02/2011 by John Vincent

John's comment - "This shot of the sun was, for speed, simply rattled off in the Olympus software that came with the camera".

Geoffrey Burbidge - 1925 - 2010 World renowned astrophysicist

Geoffrey Burbidge , born in Chipping Norton , died in January this year 2010. As part of the team which included Margaret Burbidge , Fred Hoyle & Willy Fowler - known as the B2FH team , they produced one of the most profound scientific papers of the century in which they showed that every known element ,probably every thing we are made of , came from the formation of stars . CNAAG will be presented an account of his life at the last meeting in March 2010 Robin Smitten
